I think it's a good idea to consider the area - here on Cape Cod I like the beach theme - gray or tan siding, white trim and a nice, bright, cheerful door (and/or shutters). I especially like a blue door representing the water or dark green to match surrounding foliage. Another nice color is Cranberry (for the door/shutters), very nice at Christmas and it seem to match a lot of siding choices and is a color found in nature (which is always a good choice - colors found in nature). For antique homes you should consult the historic district and Benjamin Moore has a nice selection of "Historic Colors".
